Content check-in app GetGlue gets a mobile web app - VentureBeat

AdaptiveBlue, a New York City startup that lets users “check in” to TV shows to share what they’re watching with their friends, has unveiled an HTML5 version of its GetGlue app that emulates its iPhone and Android applications.

That means GetGlue will be available to just about every smartphone or tablet device out there with a mobile browser that supports HTML5. GetGlue is already available on the iPhone, BlackBerry, and devices running Google’s Android mobile operating system. The company said around 10 percent of check-in data from applications like Foursquare comes from mobile sites.

The mobile site is similar to the application and is designed to feel like a native app like the one available on the iPhone and Android devices. TV is the biggest part of the app, but users can also check in to content like movies, songs, books, and video games. Like other check-in applications, users can earn badges and add friends so they can follow a user’s check-in data.

There’s a check-in app that users can download for their iPhone and iPad, but media companies can also add GetGlue’s check-in technology to their own apps and websites. A network could add a widget to a TV show website, and fans could then use a widget to say, “I’m watching Doctor Who,” which could then be shared on Facebook, Twitter, and within the GetGlue app itself.

Broadcast companies like USA, Showtime, and Discovery are already using GetGlue check-ins.

Foursquare, another incredibly popular check-in application that focuses on location instead of content, also has a browser-based check-in service. That application has picked up around 10 million users.

GetGlue has 1.2 million users and the company recorded 5.5 million check-ins in May. The number of check-ins through the application has doubled between June and March, according to the company.

New York, N.Y.-based ActiveBlue has received funding from Union Square Ventures, RRE Ventures, TimeWarner Investments and a number of prominent angel investors. The company raised $6 million in December last year.

Flash 10.1 Beta

A beta version of Flash Player 10.1 for Google TV is integrated directly in the Google Chrome browser. To ensure that users always have the latest version of Flash Player running on their domestic devices, Flash Player will be updated by Google by air as launched new versions of the Google TV platform.

HBO GO passes 3 million downloads. Is it worth it? - Entertainment Weekly

This past weekend, HBO GO, the premium cable channel’s mobile streaming app, surpassed the 3 million download mark after less than two months on iTunes and the Android market, but the app’s features don’t make those numbers all that surprising. HBO GO allows current subscribers full access to its library of original programming. That includes older series, previously available only on pricey DVD collections, like Sex in the City, The Wire, and The Sopranos. But with the Hulus and the Netflixs of the world, can HBO GO bring anything new to the table?

The answer is simple: Yes. With Hulu Plus, you get a large number of complete series collections and select episodes from current network TV. Netflix thrives on older series that have ended and past seasons of current programming. Each serves a distinct purpose, but with some overlap. HBO GO provides something unique, namely HBO, which as everyone knows, isn’t TV. It’s HBO.

In all seriousness, HBO GO has a lot to offer. The Wire has seen a resurgence in recent years with some universities offering courses in the David Simon series. It completely passed me by when it aired originally from 2002 to 2008, and now I need a way to see the series so I can talk about Omar with people in the know. My options include buying the complete series on DVD, which retails for $200, and renting each individual episode from Amazon for $1.39 a pop. HBO GO gives subscribers what they essentially already paid for, free of charge.

On top of older shows, HBO GO features current water cooler favorites like Game of Thrones and True Blood. As an added incentive to download the app, subscribers can catch next Sunday’s episode of True Blood, nearly a week before it airs; the network made a similar offer for Game of Thrones.

The main drawback of HBO GO, however, is the “go” part. Currently, the app only works with mobile devices. HBOGO.com gives users access to the catalog through a computer, but there still isn’t an easy way to watch on a good, old-fashioned TV. I don’t know about you, but I want the broad swords on Game of Thrones actually to look broad. Both Hulu and Netflix offer several ways to deliver their videos to your set, but as HBO GO is still in its infancy, we may have to wait for the app to catch up. It is also worth noting that not all cable companies offer the service.

Ultimately, in the video streaming market, where companies compete with often similar content, HBO GO adds a ton of value to an HBO subscription. Seriously. If you have HBO and a smart phone, go download it now. You probably have some major catching up to do.

Samsung Smart View App On Android Market Turns Galaxy Device Into TV - HDTV Test

This month saw the launch of a new and innovative app from Korean consumer electronics manufacturer Samsung in the form of the Smart View application which allows users to view content from their Smart TVs on their Galaxy S2 smartphone. In the future they will also be able to stream content from the Smart TV – currently the D7000 and D8000 series are supported – to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy S.

Released onto the Android market last week, the Samsung Smart View app is totally free, and uses wifi connection to display the images from the Smart TVs to the mobile devices. Viewers will be able to stream the content whether it is through standard broadcasting, from a Blu Ray player, via a set top box, through a camcorder, or via other input devices.

The Smart View app will allow viewers to also enjoy mobile viewing around their home. Users can either watch the same content that is on the main Smart TV on their mobile device, or can watch something different that is being played on the Blu Ray player. This will give households with a number of people but only one Smart TV more choice over what they watch. It is ideal if someone wants to watch something in another room or wants to watch a Blu Ray movie whilst someone else is watching a programme on the main internet-connected HDTV.

Samsung’s product and marketing manager for TVs Corrie Labuschagne said that the company was using its expertise and innovative technology to expand viewing opportunities for consumers through the ability to mirror images back to mobile phones through its new app. The Seoul-based consumer electronics giant also plans to continue updating the app to increase usefulness for consumers.

Turning your smartphone into a smarter TV remote - CNET (blog)

Maksim Ioffe was sitting around his San Francisco living room watching TV one day in 2009 when he noted how ridiculous it was that on his coffee table were no less than five remote controls. He thought to himself, "This has got to go."

But instead of replacing them all with yet another remote, he looked to something he already owned: his smartphone.

Fast forward to 2011, and that germ of an idea two years ago has spawned the Dijit Universal Remote App, which turns aniPhone--oriPod Touch, iPad, orAndroid phone--into a remote control.

Ioffe is not alone in looking for ways to substitute the smartphone for a remote control. There's actually a whole crop of companies that are trying to break into what some are calling the "smart-remote" business by taking advantage of the device that one-third of all U.S. cell phone owners already have on hand.

There's no agreed-on standard just yet for how best to replace the ubiquitous multibuttoned plastic living room staple. Different approaches are being offered, from free apps that control individual devices, like just your TV or just your set-top box, to a hardware accessory paired with an accompanying app that lets you control both "dumb" devices that only take infrared input and "smart" or Internet-connected devices in your home entertainment setup.

The cost can vary depending on the solution, from free to about $100. The appeal is the convenience: you probably already own a smartphone. And then there's the vast potential that the smartphone, really a minicomputer, brings to the coffee table: a bright screen with rich graphics, the ability to customize onscreen buttons as you wish, and the power of the Web to help you discover new programming or filter for just the stuff you like.

Of course there will be home theater devotees who insist they just can't give up their fancy 80-button universal remote, but there are plenty of advantages that could prove tempting for others looking for a simple and decidedly 21st century solution.

Take it from Tom Cullen, one of the founders of Sonos, the whole-house music system trailblazer that started nine years ago. As part of the Sonos system, the company also sells a $350 dedicated remote and has a free iPhone or Android app. Guess which one most people go for?

"When we started, our own physical controller was what we sold to 100 percent of our customers," Cullen said in a phone interview last week. "Today 20 percent of new customers use a dedicated Sonos controller."

In other words, the rest of them, or 8 out of 10 new buyers, choose to just use the free iPhone or Android app now with their new Sonos system. "It's extraordinary how it's moved," he said. And he and others within the company credit their first iPhone app as "one of the most important things that ever happened to us."

The customer response Sonos saw could easily be considered a case study for where the smart-remote business could go some day.

What are the options?
Most Internet-connected or "smart" TVs from Samsung, LG, Sony, and others make single-purpose Android and iOS apps that will control their TVs from a phone, tablet, or iPod Touch. TiVo has an iPad app--with an iPhone version coming soon--and of course Apple has its own Remote app that can control Apple TV and iTunes over your Wi-Fi network.

There are also apps that come paired with a piece of hardware that connects to the phone's headphone jack. My TV Remote is a $10 round dongle that plugs into an iPhone. The accompanying free app enables customizable remote buttons on screen for TVs and a variety of set-top boxes, allows users to search for shows in a program guide on the phone, and gives users the ability to see what friends are watching, chat with friends in the app, and comment on the shows.

The L5 Remote is a little more basic: it's a $50 hardware attachment that also turns an iPhone into a universal remote for most home entertainment devices that use IR (infrared) signals. It's also programmable, so you can delete buttons you don't use and save and back up different remote configurations you create.

Peel TV is a bit more involved when it comes to hardware. For $100, it's an iPhone app and IR blaster, the latter rather cheekily disguised in the shape of a plastic pear that sits on your coffee table. The app turns your phone into a universal remote for your TV, DVR, cable box, game console, and audio receiver. It works over your home Wi-Fi network and through IR.

The Dijit Universal Remote App, the one Ioffee created, is a free iPhone app that can control some connected devices, including the Roku set-top box, with no extra hardware needed. You can also update your Netlflix queue, discover new shows, and make recommendations to your social networks. But Dijit has also partnered with Griffin to work with the Beacon, an IR blaster that sits near your TV. That lets your smartphone talk to your TV and other devices than can receive only IR input. Dijit's plan is eventually to have direct access to a host of Web-enabled TVs, TiVo, and other entertainment devices without need for the Beacon.

Putting the "smart" in smart remote
Both Dijit and Peel, like My TV Remote and others, have apps that do what a plastic remote can't: take advantage of the two-way nature of the Web.

With a remote app, you're not just pushing buttons and telling the TV or your TiVo what channel to flip to. Instead a smart remote can suggest to you what to watch, or what your friends are watching, and in real time.

It makes TV watching more interactive, and it's also a potential way for these companies to make money, notes Ross Rubin, consumer electronics analyst for The NPD Group.

"Many of the companies pursuing these products are focused on building or facilitating social networks and trying to drive discovery of TV shows," said Rubin. "Which they can then leverage to garner potential interest from networks or advertisers to drive revenue."

This space and the best way to make money in it is still up for grabs, as no clear leader has emerged. The beauty of selling customers an app is that a company can adjust and update the product as needed by sending a software update to your phone--as opposed to traditional remote control makers, which have to try to sell you another piece of hardware.

And that's handy, since the still-expanding potential of smartphones makes changes necessary in order to stay ahead of or keep pace with the competition.

Cullen said the initial Sonos app boosted sales right away when released in late 2008, but that the company has seen an even steeper growth curve since iOS added multitasking capability last year.

Jeremy Toeman, chief product officer at Dijit (and an infrequent blogger for CNET, but not a paid employee of the company), acknowledged that the Dijit app will evolve as the available technology progresses: "In a year, the product will look remarkably different because this world is changing so fast."

Google and MOVL interpret Social TV games

MOVL implementation technology and Google is up drawing in games to develop a new type of social TV experience with two new applications called WeDraw.tv and PokerFun.tv. Users play the applications through your iOS or Android smartphones or tablets, but use a television as the communal Board of game screen. It sounds me a lot of multiplayer games, just with smartphones instead of keyboards and mice and television screens rather than computer monitors.

The deployment concept and trial and error experiences socially enhanced television has resurfaced tens, if not hundreds of times in the last decade, but no company has nailed the concept yet or delivered at the right time so that you can capture en masse. Google and MOVL seem willing to try again, this time relying on games to support.

The strange thing is that the part of "TV" social TV actually created not "TV" at all. The screen is being used (not TV programming content) as part of the network.

Spectators: or really "players", will be able to connect with other players from other television screens which are found in different geographical locations. WeDraw is a drawing of that television becomes the game board and game players use their phones as controllers for drawing and guessing words secrets of divination. PokerFun turns the TV on a poker table. Players see what cards that have received on your phone or tablet, where also make their bets and play the hand.

Both applications are available for withdrawal at the Centre of attention of GoogleTV (video below).

The news was announced through a guest post on the Google TV blog by Alan Queen, founder and CTO of MOVL yesterday.

The MOVL business is to create applications for mobile devices and connected television sets. Two additional applications which has listed on its Web site include WeTeli, a "social video jukebox" and SmartFitTV, a "personal trainer demand".

TouchPad Needs More Apps, Reboot To Rival iPad - Wall Street Journal

The HP TouchPad is the exact same size and weight as the original iPad, but its software is the key differentiator, Walt Mossberg says. It's the first tablet to run webOS.

A small army of multitouch tablet computers has been launched this year to take on Apple's iPad, which has managed to sell 25 million units and attract 90,000 tablet-specific apps in just about 15 months, and is already in its second generation, the iPad 2. So far, none of these contenders has gained any significant traction with consumers or app developers.

Now, the world's largest PC maker, Hewlett-Packard, is entering the fray. On Friday, it will start selling the TouchPad, a 10-inch tablet with a slick, distinctive software interface. The TouchPad starts at $500, the same entry price as the iPad 2.

The TouchPad presents running apps as 'cards'—when you tap one, it fills the screen and is ready to use.

I've been testing the TouchPad for about a week and, in my view, despite its attractive and different user interface, this first version is simply no match for the iPad. It suffers from poor battery life, a paucity of apps and other deficits.

The TouchPad comes in two versions, with 16 or 32 gigabytes of storage and, at launch, offers only Wi-Fi connectivity, though a model with a cellular data option is planned.

Clever Interface

I like the interface a lot. Instead of a screen full of app icons, the main screen of the TouchPad's operating system, called webOS, presents running apps as "cards"—large, live rectangles that you scroll through in a horizontal row.

When you tap a card, it fills the screen and is ready to use. To minimize it, you just swipe up on the bezel surrounding the screen. A second swipe takes you to a screen from which you can launch or download a new app. To get rid of a card, you just flick it upward, and it disappears. Multiple cards can run in the background.

And these cards are clever. For instance, the contacts and photo cards combine both local and online content, from sources like Google and Facebook; and cards with related functions, like an email message and an attachment you've opened, are stacked atop one another.

You can make Skype video and audio calls directly from the messaging apps. And if you buy a forthcoming H-P webOS smartphone, you can link it to the tablet wirelessly, and send and receive voice calls and text messages from the tablet, or transfer a Web page from the phone by tapping the phone on the tablet.

Hardware and Battery

But the tablet's hardware is bulbous and heavy compared with the iPad 2 or the svelte Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, an Android tablet. Worse, it's missing some key features common on the other tablets, like a rear camera or even a camera app for taking videos and still pictures. It has a front camera that can be used only for video chats.

I found the TouchPad's battery life was only 60% that of the iPad 2. In my standard tablet battery test, where I set the screen brightness to 75%, keep the Wi-Fi connection active and play local videos back to back, the TouchPad lasted just 6 hours and 5 minutes, compared with 10 hours and 9 minutes for the iPad 2. H-P claims 9 hours of continuous video playback, but that's with Wi-Fi turned off. In mixed use, battery life was decent.

Apps

When H-P bought webOS a year ago this week as part of its purchase of the system's inventor, Palm, one hope was that the giant company's clout would attract lots of apps to the platform. But the TouchPad will launch with just 300 tablet-optimized apps and only 6,200 webOS apps overall, most written for phones and only 70% of which can run on the tablet, in a small, phone-size window that can't be expanded. That compares with 425,000 total apps for the iPad and 200,000 for Android tablets, nearly all of which can run on tablets even if they aren't optimized for the tablet.

This first TouchPad has no app, such as Netflix, for streaming TV shows or movies (though its Web browser, unlike the iPad's, can run Adobe Flash and can stream videos via the Web). Its version of the QuickOffice productivity suite, unlike the same product on the iPad, can't edit documents, but merely displays them. My test unit lacked stores for directly downloading TV shows, movies and music. H-P says a music store will be available at launch and a video download store "shortly" after launch.

Glitches

I also ran into plenty of bugs in my tests, even though H-P said I was testing a production unit. For instance, on various occasions, the email app failed to display the contents of messages, the photos app failed to display pictures, and the game "Angry Birds" crashed repeatedly. All of these problems required a reboot of the device to resolve.

In addition, I found the TouchPad grew sluggish the more I used it. Again, a reboot was needed to restore normal speed. H-P acknowledges most of these problems and says it is already working on a webOS update, to be delivered wirelessly in three to six weeks that will fix nearly all of them.

Browsing and Skype

The Web browser generally worked well, but Flash was uneven. Most Flash videos played fine, but some froze or stuttered badly, even on a fast Internet connection. A site written entirely in Flash wouldn't even load. After a few false starts in my tests, Skype video worked well. I even conducted a smooth 50-minute TouchPad-to-TouchPad video call with a senior H-P executive.

Typing

Typing on the TouchPad's virtual keyboard—the first in a webOS device—was a mixed bag.

The keyboard has five rows instead of the four on the iPad, which spares you from the iPad's tedious switching of keyboard layouts to, say, type numbers or exclamation points. And you can shrink or enlarge the keyboard, a nice touch.

However, the TouchPad's auto-correct didn't insert the apostrophe in some common words, such as "don't" and "won't," slowing me down, and it lacks the common feature that inserts a period when you hit the space bar twice, a feature I missed constantly.

Also, I found it much harder to correct words, because there is no magnifying glass or similar effect to help you precisely place the cursor. H-P does sell a physical wireless keyboard for $70.

Pluses

Despite these problems, in many ways the TouchPad is a joy to use. Its new version of the operating system, webOS 3, was rebuilt with tablets in mind.

As on competing tablets, key apps have been rewritten to take advantage of the larger screen.

For instance, the email app, which can combine numerous accounts, has three sliding panels—one listing accounts and mailboxes, another listing message headers and short previews and the last containing an email's contents.

Wireless printing is built-in and worked well in my tests. The universal search function, called Just Type, works with just about every feature and app on the TouchPad. You can even type in a status message and send it to Facebook.

Notifications and common settings like Wi-Fi connections are handled discreetly and easily accessed via drop-down icons at the top of the screen.

Bottom line

H-P stresses that webOS is a platform and that the TouchPad is just one iteration of it. The company plans to add the operating system to numerous devices, including laptops, and hopes that this scale will attract many more apps. And it pledges continuous updates to fix the current shortcomings.

But, at least for now, I can't recommend the TouchPad over the iPad 2.

Android device activations now exceed 500000 per day - Apple Insider

More than a half-million Android devices are now being activated every day, and the number is growing at 4.4 percent worldwide, the head of Google's mobile platform has revealed.

Rubin disclosed the numbers in a message posted on his official Twitter account Tuesday morning. Rubin is Google's vice president of engineering, the mastermind behind Android, and a former Apple engineer.

The numbers show the pace of activations for Android is growing rapidly. In December of 2010, Rubin revealed on Twitter that Google was then activating 300,000 Android devices per day.

Last October, in a surprise appearance on his company's quarterly earnings conference call, Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs talked about Android and iOS activations. At the time, Google had said it was activating 200,000 Android devices per day, while Jobs revealed that Apple was activating 275,000 iOS devices each day with a peak of 300,000 on some days.

Since the iPhone first launched in 2007, Apple has sold more than 200 million iOS devices. iOS powers the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, and is also found in the new Apple TV.

For some time now, sales figures have shown that sales of Android-powered devices, available in multiple form factors and configurations from numerous hardware makers, have moved ahead of the iPhone and iOS.

While Android has grown in market share, Apple's profit share has eclipsed the rest of the mobile industry. In fact, one recent analysis showed that Apple could buy rivals Nokia, Research in Motion, HTC and Motorola Mobility all at once with its estimated $70 billion in cash.

Apple has panned the Android platform as fragmented and inferior to its own integrated approach. Manufacturers such as Samsung and Motorola will install their own custom user interfaces on top of the Android mobile operating system to differentiate their devices on the market.

For its part, Google has countered by promoting Android as an "open" platform, free from the types of restrictions that Apple places on users of the iPhone and iPad. The Cupertino, Calif., company maintains strict control over the iOS App Store, and all software available for download on the platform must first be reviewed and approved.

"Sprint ID has become a good, thoughtful way to provide a different user experience," said Sprint vice president of consumer marketing David Owens in an interview with FierceMobileContent earlier this year. "Now that we have 50 percent of the population buying smartphones, we need to give them an easier path to accessing content."
